Scale and Clean Dentist Ipswich
A dental scale and clean is a treatment that involves removing the plaque and tartar (also called scale) that builds up on your teeth over time. This is done using a few simple tools, and a scale and clean dentist can have your teeth looking sparkly clean in just 10-15 minutes.
Booking in for a professional scale and clean is very different from your daily brushing and flossing. While those do a good job of cleaning your teeth, your dentist has much better access to remove plaque and get rid of hard tartar build ups. Tartar is the bigger challenge here, because it can’t be removed through brushing and flossing, but it can seriously increase the chances of tooth decay. Tartar can also lead to gum disease, which can cause further issues for your oral health.
We recommend that you book a scale and clean every 6 months. Regular appointments are the best way to maintain a healthy mouth and protect your teeth.
What is Plaque?
Plaque is the sticky film that builds up on your teeth during the day. The film is made up of bacteria, food, saliva and sugars. The bacteria that live in plaque feed on the sugar and produce a small amount of acid in the process. This acid gradually dissolves your teeth enamel and can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
It’s normal to have small amounts of plaque on your teeth during the day. Plaque begins building up within a matter of hours, even if you haven’t eaten or if you recently brushed your teeth. During your appointment, we scale and clean teeth, removing plaque in areas that may be missed during your regular brushing and flossing.
What is Tartar?
Tartar is a buildup of plaque that has hardened over time. When plaque stays on your teeth for too long, it begins to harden into a white, brown or yellowish scale. It’s normal to see a small amount of tartar build up in between scale and clean appointments. If you’re seeing excessive build ups, it can be a sign that you aren’t cleaning your teeth well enough.
The big issue with tartar is that it can cause serious tooth decay and gum issues, but it can’t be cleaned off with regular brushing and flossing. You’ll need to book a scale and clean appointment and allow your dentist to remove the tartar to protect your teeth from damage.
Pain-Free Scale and Clean
At Camira Dental, we strive to make the scale and clean procedure as pleasant as possible. This can be achieved by using relative analgesia (happy gas) and topical desensitising paste. Please notify your dentist before the cleaning if you would like these used for your scale and clean.
Whether you have sensitive teeth or simply feel nervous about your appointment, our friendly Ipswich dentists are here to help.
